Originally, the London Zoo was built to be used for scientific purposes making it the world's oldest scientific zoo when it opened in 1828. In 1847 is was turned into a public zoo and is now considered as one of the most progressive zoos in the world. The London Zoo is home to more than 750 species, including various local and exotic animals, such as the endangered Asiatic lions. The first public aquarium, reptile house, and insect house were opened here. Also, the first children's zoo started operating in London Zoo.
