The Zoologischer Garten Frankfurt am Main (Frankfurt Zoo) is the zoo of Frankfurt am Main that was opened in 1858, making it the oldest zoo in Germany after the Berlin Zoo. The zoo is home to over 4,500 animals with over 500 species on more than 11 hectares. Three buildings house most animal species, including several rare species: the Grizimek-Haus, the Exotarium and the Vogelhaus. The Grizimek-Haus consists of a part with nocturnal animals and a part with mainly day-active small mammals. The Exotarium houses gentoo penguins and various fish and reptiles. The Vogelhaus is home to many bird species with surrounding aviaries.
