The museum was founded in 1996 and is named after the geologist and engineer Felice Ippolito (1915-1997). The museum coordinates and presents the Italian Antarctic research program "Programma Nazionale di Ricerche de Antartide (PNRA)". The museum is located in the exhibition area of the ancient port and illustrates the Antarctic continent and research activities, with special focus on biology and ecology.
