Exhibition 'Almere Collection: From Depot to Studio' in Kunstlinie

What stories are hidden in the art depot of a young city like Almere?
And what does this collection reveal about who we were, who we are, and who we might become?
To celebrate Almere’s 50th anniversary, Kunstlinie opens the doors to its depot. The Almere Collection comes out into the light — not just as a reflection on the past, but as a living story that can be reread, reinterpreted, and remade. This collection doesn’t only tell the story of the city’s development; it also sparks new generations of makers, thinkers, and dreamers.

From Depot to Studio is an exhibition where experience takes center stage. Visitors are taken on a physical and imaginative journey — from storage to display, from reflection to creation. The collection speaks through space, light, image, and your own engagement. You’re invited to feel, to think along, and to add your perspective.

Your view of the future
In this exhibition, works from the past are shown alongside new perspectives from today’s Almere-based artists. Curators Kasper Jongejan, Mark Wiechman, and Mik Augusteijn — each deeply connected to the city — bridge the gap between what already exists and what’s still to come.
An open call attracted more than 70 artists, from whom 44 local creators were selected. They were chosen for their diversity of background, use of materials, and aesthetic approach — but above all for their artistic depth and the way their work engages with the Almere Collection.
Three working studios have also been set up within the exhibition, where artists are developing new work surrounded by inspiration and exchange.

Meet the artists
Kate Dix celebrates her cultural heritage in a personal and playful way. Traditional Surinamese elements appear throughout her work, often contrasted with modern figures and symbols. Her queer identity is central to her artistic expression. For Kate, colors are not opposites but companions. They strengthen each other, creating a vibrant interplay of identity, tradition, and color. Her studio is a space for research and storytelling, where she brings her personal narrative to life through mixed media.

Bridget Vogelvang invites you to experience art through touch as well as sight. Her studio is an open space that encourages curiosity and discovery. Working intuitively and guided by process, Bridget follows the movements of her materials, allowing organic forms to emerge, forms that recall the body and its longing for connection. Her work explores themes of vulnerability, intimacy, and the soft yet powerful threads that connect us. Her sculptures remain open and incomplete, waiting to be “finished” by the viewer’s imagination.

Tessa Den Boef works as an illustrator from her personal studio, complete with a drawing table, a favorite chair, and a plant. Her illustrations are dynamic and expressive, often inspired by personal experiences or themes that move her. Her work is characterized by strong lines, bold supporting colors, and quick, confident strokes. Tessa works intuitively, more by impulse than by plan. Her characters range from universal to deeply personal, sometimes mirroring herself. Combining both analog and digital techniques, her studio becomes a space where creativity and experimentation meet.
