Exhibition 'Ancestral Interconnections Lynne Hocking' in Meffan Museum and Art Gallery

Ancestral Interconnections explores family connections to the weaving trade in Angus through the last seven generations of Lynne’s family who were handloom weavers, factory weavers, yarn minders and mill wrights in Forfar and Kirriemuir.
Lynne commented, “I like to say that weaving is in my DNA. I started my weaving journey in 2016 after stepping away from work as an academic scientist in the field of human genetics. I spent nine months travelling around the world with my family, immersing myself in heritage and contemporary textile craft practices and learning to weave using a backstrap loom when in northern Thailand. On my return to Scotland, I started creating handwoven objects that gave physical form to data, including genetic information. I then learned of a seven generation family history related to the weaving trade in Angus, which is where the idea for Ancestral Interconnections originated.”
The free exhibition follows the successful ANGUSalive Meffan Winter Show. With funding from Aberdeen City Council Creative Funding and Creative Scotland Open Fund, Lynne has produced a series of unique woven structures which promote discussion about concepts related to place, the value of heritage and contemporary crafts.
