Exhibition 'Bucky Lab โ Cooling the COA Living Units' in TU Delft Hortus Botanicus
In this exhibition, students from the Bucky Lab at TU Delft explore how to address a pressing problem: overheating in stackable living units used in asylum seeker centres. In collaboration with COA (Central Organisation for the Reception of Asylum Seekers), the focus was on a location in Zeist where these compact housing modules can become uncomfortably hot during the summer months.
Students were asked to develop architectural solutions to reduce heat gain and improve comfort. The resulting prototypes explore a wide range of strategies, including window-mounted sunshades, faรงade systems with integrated shading, and roof-based structures that create larger overhangs to protect entire faรงades.
The exhibition presents a diverse collection of ideas and physical models, demonstrating how thoughtful faรงade design can contribute to a cooler and more comfortable living environment.
