Playing, working or merely surviving?

Poignant, amusing, distressing and intimate. From child labour to playtime, and from thriving to surviving. This exhibition depicts the lives of children in Mesdag’s day from a variety of perspectives.

As seen through the eyes of illustrious painters of the Hague School – including Hendrik Willem Mesdag, Suze Robertson, Thérèse Schwartze, Jozef Israëls and Jacob Maris and their peers –this exhibition offers a unique glimpse into the lived experiences of children at the end of the 19th century,

The painters of the Hague School attained great international renown as masters of the landscape genre and for their paintings of poor farming and fishing communities. Now, we are turning the spotlight onto the children in their artworks, a previously neglected subject that deserves our full attention.
