Exhibition 'Counterplay' in Paleis Het Loo
From April 18 to August 31, 2025, Paleis Het Loo tells the story of three Dutch queens: Wilhelmina, Juliana, and Beatrix. The exhibition Counterplay explores how each queen finds her own path. How do they navigate their roles as both women and monarchs? How do they fulfill their duties in a male-dominated world? What role do press and public play in their story? Through seven key events, you’ll discover how myths are created—and debunked.
Social Change
The reigns of these three queens offer a masterclass in female leadership. Wilhelmina ascends the throne at a time when women are still lacking voting rights. Her daughter Juliana breaks centuries-old traditions by becoming the first Dutch princess to attend university. Beatrix modernizes the monarchy and redefines the relationship between the crown and the people.
Gender and Power
Counterplay provides a unique perspective on their lives through the lens of social change in gender and power—both in the public eye and in private. The exhibition highlights how they handle public attention—and how the media treats them. But it also delves into their personal lives. What does love look like for these queens? How do they balance motherhood with their roles as heads of state?
