Exhibition 'En toch zal ik' in Multatuli Museum

Learn more about the life and work of abolitionist Marten Douwes Teenstra (1795 -1864)

Marten Douwes Teenstra worked as a civil servant in South Africa, Java and Suriname. He described in detail the horrific conditions of the enslaved, which he himself witnessed. After returning to the Netherlands in 1834, he wrote letters to parliament, arguing vehemently for the abolition of slavery. He died in 1864, a year after the legal abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Antilles.
Abolitionist

Teenstra was considered one of the leading Dutch abolitionists in his time but fell into oblivion in later periods. The exhibition 'En toch zal ik' was created by the Urlum 1834 Foundation, based on a book by Jaap Tuma. The Multatuli House is happy to help make the work of this important writer better known outside of Groningen. That's why you can now visit the exhibition in Amsterdam!
