Exhibition 'Exeter's Fine Art Collection: Childhood' in Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery

Before the Enlightenment, children in art appeared as miniature adults. This is reflected in works such as James Gandy’s Matthew Pear, Sword Bearer of Exeter, and his Brother Philip Pear and Richard Cosway’s striking painting of Master Carew. Victorian works by Kate Greenaway such as The Stick Fire and The Garden Bench place emphasis upon childhood innocence and romanticism.
A key painting of this exhibition will be Age of Innocence by Joshua Reynolds, one of the most famous painters of the 18th century. This work is on loan from Plymouth City Museum as part of their ‘Art on Tour’ loan programme whilst the museum is closed for redevelopment.
