Exhibition 'FestIEval' in Dutch Open Air Museum
What do gabber music, Pencak Silat, Angisa, falafel and traditional Dutch games have in common? Maybe more than you think.
During FestIEval at the Dutch Open Air Museum, you will discover the diversity of living heritage in the Netherlands. On 20 and 21 June, there is something to experience throughout the museum grounds. From music and dance to rituals, traditions, crafts and food, heritage is all around us.
What is living heritage (Immaterieel Erfgoed - IE)?
Sharing a meal, celebrating together, playing games or remembering someone. These are the moments we learn and pass on to others. This is what we call living heritage. It is not something behind glass, but something that is part of everyday life.
Watch, join and meet
Meet the people behind the traditions and discover what they pass on, and what you might already carry with you. From traditional folk dance to hip hop, from knitting to flag throwing, and from hakken (a fast dance style from gabber culture) to traditional Dutch games, there is something to discover everywhere. Watch demonstrations, join a workshop or take part in a game.
Taste it for yourself
At the food square you can taste dishes that are part of living heritage. Recipes that have been passed down through generations and are still made and shared today. From Dutch sausage rolls to bara, falafel and shaved ice, different food stands introduce you to the flavours of the Netherlands.
