Exhibition 'HISTORY SECTION: PIONEERS, PROBLEMS and PROMISE' in The Vidalia Onion Museum
Onions have been around for ages! In ancient Egypt, the builders of the pyramids were paid in onions, Onions are mentioned in the Bible and were as valuable as gold in medieval Europe.
Farmers in the area began growing onions in the 1920's and 1930's. Today, millions of people associate onions with Vidalia, Georgia; yet this region's commercial crop didn't get started until long after its accidental discovery in the 1930's.
Sweet Vidalia Onion Pioneers included: Ed Tensley, Mose Coleman, Earlie Jordan, Doyle Smittle, W.J. Grimes, Pinky McRae & Gerry Achenbach, A.G. Oliver and Adger Kicklighter.
