Exhibition 'Into the Wild Abyss' in Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery
This exhibition brings together contemporary artists Gordon Cheung, Rui Matsunaga and Nahem Shoa to explore nature and spirituality in this era of accelerated technological change. The artists share a desire to express hope through hallucinatory, shimmering and imagined forms reflecting on the human condition. Into The Wild Abyss takes its title from John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost (1667). The poem tells the story of the fall of rebel angels, the temptation of Adam and Eve and their consequent expulsion from paradise. Paradise Lost can be read as a metaphor for how we have entered the 21st century, with a series of international crises, ecological concerns and political instability. The artists reflect on these and invite visitors Into The Wild Abyss. The artists have also been inspired by RAMM’s collection. They have selected some natural history specimens to complement their artwork. Into the Wild Abyss continues RAMM’s mission to unlock the potential of museum collections by partnering with contemporary artists.
