Artist Maaike Wiarda, who grew up in Bussum, has traveled extensively around the world. 'Wiarda on the move' – this title was chosen because she is actually a nomad herself; She was on the road for many years and lived and exhibited in France, Spain and Senegal, among others. This is also reflected in her work. For the 400th anniversary of New York she made her 'Wind Nomads' intended for the Oerol festival, but then moved to the big city of New York!
Maaike is both a painter and a sculptor and uses a wide variety of materials and techniques. Her bronze sculptures are often abstracted female figures.
Her abstract paintings in particular are breathtaking. An explosion of colors that takes you into Maaike's worldview. Recurring themes are chaos and order, because in these perhaps chaotic-looking canvases there is always a story - what is it about?
