Exhibition 'Menonitas | Henk Bleeker' in Museum Martena

What does it mean to live consciously and simply?

A century ago, a remarkable group of people settled in the natural landscapes of Paraguay: the Mennonites. Their close-knit society grew into a highly successful agricultural community, with strong traditions passed down from generation to generation. While the world around them continues to change at an ever-faster pace, they choose to hold on to a way of life shaped by rhythm, faith, community and simplicity.

In 2025, artist and photographer Henk Bleeker from Alde Leie was given the rare opportunity to get to know this closed community up close. His photographs reveal not only how the Mennonites live, but above all, who they are. Behind every portrait and every landscape lies a story of belonging, identity and the enduring power of tradition.

Who are the Menonitas?

The history of the Mennonites begins closer to home than you might think. Their faith originated in the 16th century with the Frisian religious reformer Menno Simons (1496–1561). After a long journey across Europe, his followers eventually settled in places including Paraguay, where they have managed to preserve their own culture to this day.

Menonitas takes you into a world that seems far away, yet feels surprisingly close. A world that invites you to pause and reflect on questions that remain relevant today. What do we preserve from our traditions? What brings us together? And what can we learn from people who consciously choose a simpler way of life?

Menonitas is on view at Museum Martena from 17 October to 6 December.
