Exhibition 'RNLI Exhibition HOPE IN THE GREAT WAR' in Teignmouth and Shaldon Museum
The RNLI Exhibition ‘ Hope In the Great War’ is coming to Teign Heritage Centre in Teignmouth on 29th April 2017. We are very excited that we are the only venue in Devon to be hosting this national exhibition which is touring the UK during the four year period from 2014 until 2018. It tells the story of six heroic rescues carried out by lifeboat crews around Britain during the period of the First World War 1914-1918 and honours the bravery of the RNLI volunteers who risked their lives to save others. One of the stories features the saving of 20 lives from the tanker Ponus by the Falmouth lifeboat crew and servicemen. The Ponus went aground in November 1916 and was driven ashore near Pendennis Point. One of the features of the exhibition is a story quilt, aimed at the under fives, made by Falmouth Lighthouse Quilters The family friendly exhibition, made possible by Arts Council England, also has a giant jigsaw puzzle, film and audio clips and interactive displays. Our researchers at Teign Heritage have been gathering information for the display about two local wrecks from 1917. The Galicia, which sank off the coast of Teignmouth after being struck by a mine, and the Peronne, torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine. There will also be a display about our own Teignmouth lifeboat during the war years, the Alfred Staniforth. After the official opening by the President of Teign Heritage, Viv Wilson MBE, the exhibition will be open to the public from 12pm on Saturday 29th April until 10th June 2017. The museum will open on Sunday 30th April from 12pm until 4pm and all day on Monday 1st May from 10am until 5pm. Admission to the museum costs £2.20 and is free for children.
