Exhibition 'The Beckford Women' in Beckford's Tower and Museum
The piety of his mother and the purity of Lady Catherine Hamilton provided a strong female presence in his youth. His many letters and writings illustrate how he respected and ridiculed his half-sister (Elizabeth Hervey), adored his wife (Lady Margaret Gordon) and treasured his daughters, but frequently distanced himself from them. This exhibition explores the lives, loves and loss of the women who influenced – and were influenced by – Beckford.
