Exhibition 'Time & Tide: Panoramic photographs by Siebe Swart' in Museum Panorama Mesdag
Emptiness and space
A series of monumental panoramic photographs by Siebe Swart (1957): Time and tide wait for no man. Museum Panorama Mesdag is showing this imposing cycle of black-and-white images of the Dutch coast for the first time.
Swart’s photographic panoramas were inspired by the emptiness and space he found along the coasts of the North Sea, the Wadden Sea and the former Zuiderzee. The artist himself describes the series as ‘a journal of a personal voyage of discovery along the Dutch coast, the results of wandering the coastline during storms, at high and low tide, night, twilight and sunrise.’ It is a personal, autonomous cycle that shows the endless landscape from a human perspective.
