Exhibition 'Travelling Terrors; Shared Beliefs' in Norton Priory Museum & Gardens
600 years ago the St Christopher statue at Norton Priory protected pilgrims making the perilous journey across the Mersey. 300 years later and similar fears and beliefs led Chinese sailors to protect their ships with portable shrines. One such shrine was found floating in the sea near Guangzhou at the end of the 18th century following a terrible storm. This fascinating object, on loan from National Museums Liverpool will be on display at Norton Priory for the duration of the BBC Civilisations Festival. The display will be complemented by a day of lion dancing and dragon displays as well as arts and crafts for families on Sunday the 4th March.
