Exhibition 'Van wastobbe tot wadi: water dat de wijk verbindt' in Wijkmuseum Soesterkwartier

The exhibition Van wastobbe tot wadi: water dat de wijk verbindt focuses on a number of themes on the role that water has played over the centuries in and for the Soesterkwartier district: water in the house, work on the water, disappeared and existing water, relaxation by the water and flooding over the centuries.

The exhibition features special historical photos and maps, objects from the collection of the Wijkmuseum and Museum Flehite, documentation from the Eemland Archives and there is also a visual representation especially for the exhibition; a neighborhood genesis, made from the soil and water beneath the neighborhood.

The exhibition starts in the Museum House, where the history of water in the former workers' house is told through a number of objects. How did they do the laundry, how did the residents wash themselves and the children, how did the cleaning go in the 1930s to the 1950s. The plans for the bathhouse, which never came to be in the neighborhood, can also be seen. But the history of water in the Soesterkwartier goes back much longer. Water has played an important role in and for the district over centuries.

The current district was once the wettest place to be found near medieval Amersfoort. You often got your feet wet in the swampy area. This has not been the case for a long time now and residents regularly struggle with flooding and drought. The neighborhood history created especially for 'From wash tub to wadi' provides insight into the causes. The exhibition also pays attention to the major job creation projects of the last century: the construction of the public park belt, the forest pond and the forest pool. Water as a source of entertainment and relaxation is also discussed.
