Exhibition 'Vorschau 2027: Die Duisburger Künstlerin Marianne Nieten-Overbeck (1903 - 1970)' in Museum St. Laurentius
The only woman among the founding members of the Association of Duisburg Artists (Bund Duisburger Künstler), whose centenary we celebrated in 2023, was Marianne Nieten(-Overbeck). She studied at the Reimann School in Berlin and at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, and took classes in the studio in Munich of Moritz Heymann. Her exhibition activity is documented from 1925 onwards. After World War II, like so many artists of the lost generation, she increasingly faded into obscurity. In 1949, Marianne Nieten-Overbeck's works were last exhibited in Germany at the Duisburg Municipal Art Museum, now the Lehmbruck Museum, Duisburg, together with paintings by Hans Peter Calmés.
After emigrating, she was able to resume her exhibition successes in Brazil; her works were selected for the 2nd São Paulo Biennial. A posthumous tribute of 102 works, largely created in Brazil, was presented by the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo in March 1972.
For years, the curators of the St. Laurentius Museum tracked down the paintings of Marianne Nieten-Overbeck and researched her biography in order to bring the once celebrated artist back into the consciousness of art history.
