Exhibition 'William Catt, Tide Mills and East Beach' in Newhaven Museum
Explore the world of William Catt, the Tide Mills community, and the industrious East Beach landscape that shaped local life for generations.
Central to the exhibition are 18 information boards, guiding visitors through the rise of the Tide Mills settlement, and the structures and people who lived and worked along this distinctive stretch of coast.
A film from LYT Productions adds depth and colour, using archive material, photography and thoughtful storytelling and interviews to bring Tide Mills to life. It provides an ideal introduction for newcomers and a fresh perspective for those already familiar with the area.
Complementing the main exhibition is a display of paintings by Stan Tubb, the last person to live at Tide Mills. His work captures the coastline and the mill buildings of the village and the East Beach. These paintings offer a personal perspective from someone who knew the site more intimately than anyone else.
Families visiting the museum can also enjoy a children’s Tide Mills trail, designed to engage younger visitors with questions and clues. The trail encourages curiosity, helps children spot details they might otherwise miss, and offers a fun way to explore the story of the village.
The exhibition also presents a selection of original finds recovered from the Tide Mills site. These domestic fragments offer a tangible link to the Tide Mills community.
