Future Developments at Arouca Monastery

In 2016, the Arouca Monastery was included in the 'Revive' program, a Portuguese state initiative that encourages private investment in heritage sites for the development of tourist projects. In April 2019, a 50-year concession contract was signed with the MS Hotels & Resorts group. The group plans to invest an estimated 3.5 million euros in the restoration of the building and will pay an annual rent of 42,000 euros. The plans include the construction of a 4-star hotel with 60 to 70 rooms, a spa, an indoor and outdoor pool, and a paddle court. A restaurant is also planned to be built.
