The Trieste Marine Aquarium houses 25 tanks that recreate various marine environments. These tanks host predominantly Adriatic species, including cnidarians, annelids, mollusks, echinoderms, and crustaceans. This variety of marine life offers visitors a chance to learn about and appreciate the biodiversity of the Adriatic Sea.
The ground floor of the Trieste Marine Aquarium features a large octagonal tank that hosts sharks and rays. It also had a tank that housed penguins from South Africa, including a penguin named Marco who lived in the aquarium for 31 years. These exhibits provide a unique opportunity for visitors to observe these fascinating creatures up close.
The first floor of the Trieste Marine Aquarium is occupied by the vivarium, which hosts a variety of amphibians, reptiles, and freshwater fish. Additionally, there is a large terrarium that recreates a karst pond, home to common toads, green frogs, and tree frogs. This floor offers visitors a chance to explore a different aspect of aquatic life, extending beyond the marine environment.
