The Adventure Aquarium, previously known as the Thomas H Kean New Jersey State Aquarium, is a for-profit educational entertainment attraction. It is situated in Camden, New Jersey, on the Delaware River Camden Waterfront. The aquarium is operated by Herschend Family Entertainment and was originally opened in 1992. It was reopened in its current form on May 25, 2005.

Animal and Habitat Diversity at the Adventure Aquarium

The Adventure Aquarium is home to approximately 8,000 animals that live in a variety of semi-aquatic, freshwater, and marine habitats. The facility boasts a total tank volume of over 2 million US gallons and a public floor space of 200,000 square feet. This makes it a spacious and diverse environment for visitors to explore and learn about aquatic life.

Introduction of Ocean Base Atlantic

In 1994, the Adventure Aquarium introduced a new attraction called Ocean Base Atlantic. This exhibit showcased a variety of aquatic life from across the Atlantic Ocean, including fish, birds, sharks, and sea turtles. The introduction of this exhibit added a new dimension to the aquarium, offering visitors a broader perspective of marine life.

Introduction of the Conservation Outreach and Outreach Lab

In 2000, the Adventure Aquarium introduced an exhibit called the Conservation Outreach and Outreach Lab, or COOL. This exhibit featured the adventures of a fictitious marine biologist, Dr. Marina del Mar, and showcased aquatic life from the Indo-Pacific, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. This exhibit offers visitors a unique and engaging way to learn about diverse aquatic ecosystems.

Adventure Aquarium Reviews

Adventure Aquarium has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

Adventure Aquarium in Camden, New Jersey offers a diverse marine life experience. Visitors appreciate the variety of exhibits, including the shark tunnel, penguin island, and hippo haven. The touch tanks, particularly the stingray exhibit, are popular among guests. Many find the layout well-organized and easy to navigate. The aquarium's location on the waterfront provides nice views of the Philadelphia skyline.

However, some visitors feel the admission price is high for the size of the aquarium. Crowding can be an issue during peak times, potentially detracting from the experience. A few guests mention that some exhibits could benefit from updates or expansions. The food options inside are often described as limited and overpriced.

Overall, Adventure Aquarium provides an entertaining and educational experience for families and marine life enthusiasts, though it may not meet everyone's expectations in terms of value for money.
