The Division of Alaska State Troopers was established in 1967, succeeding the Alaska Highway Patrol (1941-1953), Alaska Territorial Police (1953-1959), and Alaska State Police (1959-1967). The agency was created by law to 'protect the lives, property, and constitutional rights of Alaskans'.
The state police force includes several specialized services. It also features a training center, the Alaska Department of Public Safety Training Academy, which is open to all police officers in Alaska. Additionally, there is a technical and scientific police laboratory, the State Scientific Crime Detection Labsis, located in Anchorage.
Since 2009, the Alaska State Troopers have been the subject of a documentary series titled 'Alaska State Troopers'. This series is produced for the National Geographic Channel and recounts the daily lives of these law enforcement officers. It provides an in-depth look into the work and challenges faced by the troopers in the vast Alaskan landscape.
