The American Textile History Museum, situated in Lowell, Massachusetts, was originally established as the Merrimack Valley Textile Museum in North Andover, Massachusetts. The museum was founded in 1960 by Caroline Stevens Rogers, a member of a textile industry family and a hand weaver and dyer. The museum was dedicated to telling America’s story through the art, science, and history of textiles.
In June 2016, the American Textile History Museum closed its doors due to significant financial deficits. The museum announced that it was closing permanently and began the process of selling off all its assets.
The permanent exhibit at the American Textile History Museum was titled 'Textile Revolution: An Exploration through Space and Time'. This exhibit showcased a variety of materials, from the protective clothing worn by firefighters and soldiers to the 'shark skin' swimsuits of Olympic swimmers. The exhibit aimed to demonstrate how textiles are changing the world.
