Historical Background of the Museum Building

The Archaeological Museum of Itaipu is housed in the ruins of the former Recolhimento de Santa Teresa. This institution was founded in 1764 by priests Manuel Francisco da Costa and Manuel da Rocha. It was intended to shelter women who intended to follow religious life, orphans, women of easy life, those who had become pregnant or had romances before marriage, widows, and those who were installed there by their parents or husbands when they went on a trip.

Museum's Collection

The institutional collection of the museum is composed of the Hildo Collection, witness blocks from the Sambaqui de Camboinhas, a 19th-century canoe, and archaeological artifacts found in the vicinity of the museum. The Hildo Collection, which forms the initial core of the institutional collection, was formed during the 1960s and 1970s through collection at the archaeological site of Duna Grande by amateur archaeologist Hildo de Mello Ribeiro.
