In January 1832, Dwight Baldwin was first assigned to the mission in Waimea on the island of Hawaiʻi, where he served with Lorenzo Lyons at Imiola Church. Four years later, in 1836, he was sent to Waineʻe Church, now known as Waiola Church, established by William Richards at Lahaina on the island of Maui. This location became the base for most of his career, marking a significant chapter in his life and the history of the islands.

The Baldwin House Museum: A Historical Landmark

Between 1834 and 1835, Reverend Ephraim Spaulding constructed a house of coral and volcanic stone at Lahaina. When Spaulding returned to the United States in 1838, the Baldwin family moved into the house and owned it for nearly 130 years. In 1967, the house was deeded from the Baldwin family to the Lahaina Restoration Foundation and was repurposed as the Baldwin House Museum, also known as the Baldwin Home Museum.

The Destruction of the Baldwin Home Museum

On August 8, 2023, a massive wildfire tragically destroyed the Baldwin Home Museum, along with most of the historic town of Lahaina. This unfortunate event marked a significant loss for the community and the preservation of Hawaiian history, as the museum was a key landmark that showcased the life and contributions of Dwight Baldwin.

The museum features period furnishings and artifacts that help illustrate daily life during that era. Many visitors appreciate the knowledgeable docents who provide informative tours, adding depth to the experience.
