Benjamin Thompson House–Count Rumford Birthplace

The Benjamin Thompson House, also known as the Count Rumford Birthplace, is a historic house museum and National Historic Landmark. It is located at 90 Elm Street, in the North Woburn area of Woburn, Massachusetts. This house is significant as it is the birthplace of the scientist and inventor Benjamin Thompson, who later became Count Rumford of the Holy Roman Empire and Sir Benjamin Thompson of the United Kingdom.

Museum Features and Visitor Information

The Benjamin Thompson House is currently owned by the Rumford Historical Association, which was founded in 1877 to maintain it as a site of historic interest. The museum within the house features reconstructed models of Count Rumford's scientific experiments and inventions. Visitors can also view a copy of a portrait of Count Rumford by Gainsborough. The house also has a library of Rumford biographies and essays. The museum is open to the public on Sunday afternoons from 1–4:30 pm from June through October and by appointment. Admission to the museum is free.
