The Bergwerk Käpfnach, located in Horgen in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland, is a former brown coal and marl mine. It boasts a total tunnel length of 80 km, making it the largest of its kind in the country. This historical site offers a unique insight into the mining industry of the past.
The Bergwerkverein Käpfnach, established on December 2, 1982, had the goal of creating a museum and making the tunnels as accessible as possible to the public. Today, visitors can explore a portion of the mine and tunnel system, which includes a 1.4 km long tunnel railway. The mining museum, located in the former coal magazine, has welcomed over 250,000 visitors on more than 15,000 tours by 2018, offering a glimpse into the underground world of Horgen.
Despite a fire on December 11, 2015, that caused significant damage to the area above the museum, visitor operations were never interrupted. The mining museum reopened on April 7, 2018, with a newly designed exhibition, demonstrating the resilience and dedication of the museum staff to preserving and showcasing this historical site.
