Birdoswald, also known as Banna, is a significant historical site in northern England. It was one of the Roman forts along Hadrian's Wall, a defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britannia. Birdoswald is one of the best-preserved forts of this border defense, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the past. The fort is situated on a height above the River Irthing, providing a strategic vantage point that the Romans would have used to their advantage.
Religious Artifacts at Birdoswald
Excavations at Birdoswald have revealed a wealth of artifacts that provide insight into the religious practices of the Roman soldiers stationed there. Among the discoveries are a Jupiter altar and an altar for the god Silvanus, indicating the worship of these Roman deities. Additionally, inscriptions with Dacian personal names have been found, suggesting the presence of soldiers from Dacia (modern-day Romania). Altars for the local Celtic gods Dea Latis and Cocidius were also discovered, showing a blending of Roman and local religious practices.
Post-Roman History of Birdoswald
The history of Birdoswald did not end with the departure of the Romans in 410. Habitation continued within the fort walls, with a wooden hall being built in the northeast corner of the fort. This suggests that the site remained of strategic importance even after the Roman era. In the 16th century, a fortified farm called Birdoswald was built on the site of the old fort, further testament to the enduring significance of this location. Today, visitors can explore these layers of history and gain a deeper understanding of the site's past.
