Campus Galli and its collection

Campus Galli
Source

Campus Galli is a unique project located in Meßkirch, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is a Carolingian monastic community that is currently under construction. The project aims to build a medieval monastery according to the early ninth-century Plan of Saint Gall using techniques from that era. This makes it a living history site where visitors can witness the construction process and learn about the historical techniques used.

Visiting the Construction Site

The construction site of Campus Galli has been open to the public since June 2013. This allows visitors to observe the ongoing construction process, learn about the historical building techniques being used, and interact with the staff members who are working on the project. It's a unique opportunity to witness a piece of history being recreated.

Use of Raw Materials

One of the unique aspects of the Campus Galli project is that the major raw materials used in the construction, such as wood and stone, are obtained directly from the site. This not only adds to the authenticity of the project but also allows visitors to see how these materials are processed and used in the construction.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

Campus Galli offers a unique experience of medieval construction techniques and craftsmanship. Visitors can observe and interact with skilled craftspeople as they build a 9th-century monastery using only tools and methods from that era. The site provides an educational journey into the past, showcasing various aspects of medieval life and architecture. While the ongoing construction project is impressive, some visitors might find the experience limited, as the site is still in development. The outdoor setting can be affected by weather conditions, which may impact the overall experience. Despite these minor drawbacks, many visitors appreciate the authenticity and dedication to historical accuracy. The hands-on demonstrations and knowledgeable staff contribute to an engaging and informative visit for those interested in medieval history and traditional craftsmanship.
