The centerpiece of Capitol Reef National Park is the Waterpocket Fold, a geological formation that stretches over 150 km in a north-south direction. Originally horizontal layers of sediment were tilted and bent during the uplift of the Colorado Plateau, and erosion created the current 'fold', which, like a fault, shows distinct dividing lines between the geological layers.

Fruita: The First Settlement in Capitol Reef National Park

Around 1900, the first settlement, Fruita, was established on the banks of the Fremont River. The settlers of this area skillfully irrigated the fertile soil, which enabled them to cultivate fruit. As a result, Fruita became known for the quality of its fruit, marking an important chapter in the history of the area that is now Capitol Reef National Park.
