The Capuchin catacombs of Palermo are a significant tourist attraction, renowned globally for their unique appeal. These catacombs were excavated in the late 16th century, featuring a distinct Gothic style. Although an official inventory of the bodies present in the catacombs has never been conducted, estimates suggest that they house around 8,000 bodies. This vast number contributes to the catacombs' intrigue and historical significance.

The Story of Rosalia Lombardo

Among the many bodies housed in the Capuchin Catacombs, the mummy of Rosalia Lombardo holds a particular significance. Born in Palermo on December 13, 1918, and tragically passing away from pneumonia on December 6, 1920, at the tender age of 2, Rosalia was one of the last individuals to be interred in the crypt. Her well-preserved state has earned her the nickname 'Sleeping Beauty', adding a poignant narrative to the catacombs' history.
