The Carmen Miranda Museum, situated in Eduardo Gomes Park, also known as Flamenco Park, is a tribute to the singer and actress Carmen Miranda. The museum was officially established in 1956 and opened its doors to the public in 1976. It was created to honor the life and career of Carmen Miranda, a significant figure in the entertainment industry.
The Carmen Miranda Museum boasts the largest collection of original objects used by Carmen Miranda. These include her clothing, accessories, personal items, and a wealth of textual and iconographic documentation. The museum serves as a primary source of information about the singer and the era in which she lived, making it a valuable resource for research and communication.
In 2009, the government of the State of Rio de Janeiro announced plans for a new headquarters for the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) in Copacabana. This new location is set to house the entire collection of the Carmen Miranda Museum. The project, which is a joint effort of the State Secretariat of Culture and the Roberto Marinho Foundation, is expected to attract around 600,000 visitors per year.
