Substantial remains of one of the earliest stone-built castles in Britain, built around 1067, the centre of the medieval Marcher lordship of Chepstow. Home to the 'Greatest Knight' William Marshal and his family. The castle was modified and developed in successive stages throughout the Middle Ages and saw further action during and after the Civil War. OS map 162: ST 533941
