The Chicago Athenaeum is a private museum dedicated to the art of design in all its forms: architecture, industrial and product design, graphics, landscape architecture, and urban planning. Located in Galena, Illinois, the museum is housed in a former brewery building, adding a touch of historical charm to its modern focus. It was founded in 1988 by Christian K. Narkiewicz-Laine in Chicago and moved to its current location in 2004.
In addition to its indoor exhibits, the Chicago Athenaeum also maintains an international sculpture park. This outdoor space features contemporary works from American and international sculptors, with pieces hailing from countries such as Greece, Norway, Germany, Finland, Poland, Iceland, and Switzerland. The sculpture park provides a unique opportunity to appreciate art in a natural setting.
The Chicago Athenaeum boasts a diverse range of collections that provide a comprehensive overview of design history. These collections include the history of Chicago architecture, the history of industrial design in Chicago from 1900 to 1950, European and American furniture, Japanese graphics, and the works of Anne Swainson, Montgomery Ward, and Ellen Manderfield. The museum also explores the history of good design and ethnographic art in relation to design.
