Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola

One of the key features of the Church of Sant’Ignazio di Loyola in Campo Marzio is its remarkable perspective frescoes. These frescoes are the work of Andrea Pozzo, a painter and Jesuit brother. Pozzo was a master of perspective illusion architecture, and his work in the church is considered one of the boldest examples of illusionistic painting. A marble disc on the church floor marks the focal point of the perspective, from which the illusion architecture of the painting unfolds correctly.

Construction and Design of Sant’Ignazio

The Church of Sant’Ignazio di Loyola in Campo Marzio was constructed based on the designs of Jesuit and mathematician Orazio Grassi. The church was first opened to the public in the Holy Year 1650. With a length of over 80 meters and a width of 43 meters, it is one of the largest churches in Rome. The church's design is a single-nave cross with a transept dome.

Burial Place and Altar of Sant’Ignazio

The Church of Sant’Ignazio di Loyola in Campo Marzio is also notable as the burial place of the young Jesuit Aloisius von Gonzaga, who passed away in 1591 and was canonized in 1726. The church's altar, a significant feature, was designed by Andrea Pozzo, the same artist responsible for the church's renowned frescoes.
