The Crow Valley School was built in 1888 and served as an educational and community hub for islanders until it officially closed in 1918. Crow Valley School taught grades one through eight with lessons focused on the practical applications of basic math and English. Students often walked miles to reach school and were expected to contribute to group chores such as chopping firewood and collecting water from the stream. They also created their own outdoor basketball court and composed the rousing Crow Valley School cheer that concludes with shouts of “Caw, caw, caw!” Thanks to the work of Richard Schneider and Bud McBride, much of the schoolhouse has been restored and the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The one-room schoolhouse is part of the Orcas Island Historical Museums and is open regularly for visitors from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The Museum is located just next to Turtleback Mountain Preserve; come out for a full day of picnicking and outdoor activities in beautiful Crow Valley. Admission is free with donations gratefully accepted. The mission of Orcas Island Historical Museums is to educate, inspire, connect and involve our community and visitors in the stewardship of our unique island history.
