The Defensionskaserne Erfurt, a former military facility, is the largest building on the Petersberg in Erfurt. It has been under monument protection and has been vacant since around the year 2000. This historical building offers a glimpse into the past and is a significant part of Erfurt's history.
The Defensionskaserne was constructed between 1828 and 1831 on the site of a destroyed monastery. The building was strategically designed to restrict the view into the upper plateau from the north and to divide the fortress into two independent sections. This architectural design reflects the military strategies of the time and provides an interesting insight for visitors.
In September 2021, the Defensionskaserne was sold to Erfurt investor Frank Sonnabend. He plans to develop a mixed use of creative industries, gastronomy, culture, and media for the building. This development plan indicates a promising future for the building, making it a potential point of interest for tourists.
