The Dortmund Zoo, in full Zoologischer Garten der Stadt Dortmund, is the zoo of the German city of Dortmund which was opened on 1958. The zoo is home to around 1500 animals from around 240 species. Zoo Dortmund is best known for the large collection of South American animal species. The Dortmund Zoo is segmented according to the so-called "Geozoo" principle, where animal species from the same part of the world are kept in the same part of the zoo. Animal species from all continents are represented at the Dortmund Zoo, even though its focus is on South America.
