The Dr. Juan A. Rivero Zoo, also known as the Mayagüez Zoo, was a significant zoological park located in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Spanning 45 acres, it was owned by the Government of Puerto Rico and operated by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources. The zoo was named in honor of its first director, Juan A. Rivero, and was the only zoo in Puerto Rico.
The Dr. Juan A. Rivero Zoo closed to the public after the devastating impact of Hurricane Maria in 2017. Despite efforts to maintain the zoo and plans for a 2021 reopening, the zoo ultimately ceased all operations in 2023. This closure followed much scrutiny in its final years due to concerns about the health and treatment of the animals.
The Dr. Juan A. Rivero Zoo was originally opened in 1954, following legislation authored by Benjamin Cole. The zoo underwent a significant upgrade in 2003, with the addition of an aviary, an arthropodary, and a butterfly exhibition. These additions enhanced the zoo's extensive collection of animals from all continents.
