Nice building and good space and open on New Year's Day. There are some interesting pieces of earlier New Zealand art in the European/Colonial style but the descriptions of much of these tend to be woeful and play to the new culture of identity. For example, the description of the Gainsborough is terrible and tells you nothing about the painting (whether the co-artist was a pupil of Gainsborough, as so often the case in those days, nor anything about the subjects of the painting). Instead there is general waffle which tends to suggest that the curator in this case was not up to the job. This is not the only sole example. Pity because there was much potential to educate and inform about the interesting collection.
