Espeland fangeleir and its collection

Espeland fangeleir
Source

Espeland fangeleir, located in Moldalia on Espeland in Arna in Bergen municipality, is a preserved war prisoner camp. It holds a significant historical value as it is the only complete German-built prisoner facility left of over 600 prisoner camps in Norway during the occupation period. This makes it a unique site for understanding the conditions and experiences of prisoners during the war.

Current Role and Function of Espeland fangeleir

Espeland fangeleir was preserved in November 2014, and the Espeland fangeleir Foundation took over ownership in January 2015. In 2022, the institution was renamed the Lenken Foundation, and it also includes the Gestapo Museum in Bergen city center. Today, the camp serves as a competence and dissemination center, with a particular focus on educating school students. This makes it a valuable resource for learning about the history of the Second World War.
