The Ethnographic Collection of the University of Marburg, which is part of the Department of Comparative Cultural Research of the Philipps University of Marburg, houses an impressive collection of over 5000 objects from all parts of the world. This vast collection provides a unique opportunity for visitors to explore and learn about various cultures and their artifacts.
A significant portion of the objects in the Ethnographic Collection of the University of Marburg comes from South America and Africa. These artifacts can be traced back to the collection of the renowned South American researcher Theodor Koch-Grünberg, whose children donated his collection to the museum in 1999. This provides a unique insight into the cultures of these regions during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In addition to the vast collection, the Ethnographic Collection of the University of Marburg also features a seminar room for collection-related teaching events. Furthermore, regular exhibitions are held in the building of the Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology, often involving the participation of students. These exhibitions provide an opportunity for visitors to see curated displays and learn more about specific aspects of the collection.
