The Northern Ireland Aquarium was opened by Ards Borough Council in 1987 to enable the public to view the amazingly diverse marine life that exists around these islands. The conservation village of Portaferry was the ideal location. It is sited on the shores of the Marine Nature reserve of Strangford Lough which contains nearly three quarters of all the marine species to be found in Northern Irish waters.

The facility features a variety of aquatic exhibits showcasing both local and exotic species. Visitors often appreciate the diverse range of sea creatures on display, including fish, rays, and seahorses. The seal sanctuary is a highlight for many, allowing guests to observe rescued seals and learn about conservation efforts. The touch tanks provide an interactive element, especially popular with children. While the aquarium receives praise for its educational value and the dedication of its staff, some visitors note that it's relatively small compared to larger aquariums. The outdoor seal enclosure and the daily seal feedings are frequently mentioned as memorable experiences.
