The Finsterwalde Zoo, founded in 1969, is situated in the Finsterwalde Bürgerheide of the city of Finsterwalde in the Elbe-Elster district in southern Brandenburg. This location offers a unique setting for the zoo, providing a natural habitat for the animals and a serene environment for visitors.
In 2019, several new attractions were inaugurated at the Finsterwalde Zoo. These include a petting zoo, a new Africa savannah exhibit, and the new Gibbon House. These additions provide a variety of experiences for visitors, from interactive encounters at the petting zoo to observing exotic animals in the Africa savannah and Gibbon House.
As of 2023, the Finsterwalde Zoo is home to 250 animals of 55 different species. The diverse collection includes White-tailed Porcupines, Zebra Mongooses, Fallow Deer, South African Crowned Cranes, Black Swans, Yellow-breasted Macaws, and domestic breeds such as Dwarf Goats. This wide variety of species offers visitors the opportunity to learn about and observe animals from different parts of the world.
