The Firelands Museum, located in Norwalk, Ohio, holds the distinction of being the oldest operating museum in the state. It was established by the Firelands Historical Society, which began its collection of artifacts as early as 1857. This long history of preservation and display makes the museum a significant destination for those interested in the history of Ohio and the broader region.
The museum is now located in the Preston-Wickham mansion on West Main Street. This historic house, built by Samuel Preston in 1834, was saved from demolition by the society. Preston, the founder of the Norwalk Reflector newspaper, published the paper in this house for several years. This connection to local history adds a unique charm to the museum.
Among the exhibits at the Firelands Museum are various organs and pianos made by the A.B. Chase Piano Company, a Norwalk firm that operated from 1876 to 1930. The museum also boasts an impressive collection of hundreds of antique pistols and rifles, many of which were donated by Norwalk business leader George Titus. These collections provide a fascinating glimpse into the past.
