Fort Jackson, a National Historic Landmark, is a historic masonry fort situated 40 miles upriver from the mouth of the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. Constructed between 1822 and 1832, the fort served as a coastal defense for New Orleans and was a significant battle site during the American Civil War.
Today, Fort Jackson is a National Historic Landmark and a historical museum owned and operated by Plaquemines Parish. While the Fort Jackson Museum is open to the public, it is not located at the fort site. Instead, it can be found approximately 1 mile southwest from Fort Jackson at the Plaquemines Parish's District 9 office, located at 38039 Hwy 23, Buras, LA 70041.
Since 1970, the grounds of Fort Jackson have been hosting two significant local events: the Plaquemines Parish Fair and the Orange Festival. These events have become a part of the fort's modern history and continue to attract visitors.
